Household tax credit

On this page we tell you what the household allowance is, how much you can get and how to claim it.

What is the household allowance ?

Work done at home and in a leisure dwelling qualifies for a tax relief called the household allowance. You can get help from the government by commissioning the installation (or renovation) work from a professional and then claiming the household allowance for your share of the work.

Who gets the household allowance?

A person who is taxable in Finland receives a household allowance for work carried out on their own home or leisure home, subject to the conditions.
You can also get a household allowance for work done in the homes of close relatives. In this case, the recipient of the household allowance must be the person who paid for the work or service. You should bear this in mind when ordering installation services for grandparents or parents, as you will be entitled to a household allowance for the installation work. However, parents are not allowed to take a deduction for work done in their children's homes
The household deduction only applies to individuals, i.e. not businesses or corporations.

How much is the household allowance?

In 2024, it will be 40% of the renovation and renovation work paid for, less a €100 deductible. However, up to a maximum of €2250 per person per year. So, with a spouse, it is €4500 (- deductible per person). If the amount of the household allowance does not exceed €2250, it is best to apply for it in one person's name only, so that you don't have to pay the excess twice. The excess is per year, not per project!

Lighting and electrical renovation of the kitchen area

We can provide you with the lights and new sockets for your kitchen area. The price of the project including lights is 1500€, of which installation work is 600,00€

You get a 40% household tax credit: 600€ x 0,4 = 240€
Deduction for own contribution: 240€ - 100€ = 140€

So you get 140€ back for the installation.

Installation of lighting in a detached house

You order from us the installation of all the lights in the OKT you are renovating. The cost of the installation is 7000€ per project.

You will receive a 40% household tax credit: 7000€ x 0,4 = 2800€
Deduction of own contribution: 2800€ - 100€ = 2700€

So you get a maximum of 2250€ back for the installation,

When you exceed your own maximum, the excess can be used for the tax of a spouse or registered partner living in the same dwelling. The tax authorities will do this automatically (or on your tax return) for the excess amount. In this case, the spouse will therefore receive a household allowance of €2700 - €2250 = €450, less a €100 deductible. This means that 2600€ will be refunded for the part of the renovation work

Which work is covered by the household allowance?

You can claim the household allowance for various types of home and leisure home maintenance work (also care and domestic work is covered by the household allowance, with a higher 60% deduction!)
NOTE! New construction is therefore not considered maintenance or renovation, i.e. electrical work and construction work on a new home or outbuilding is not eligible for the household deduction either.

See the Tax Administration's website for more details on which works qualify for the household credit

How to apply for the household credit?
You apply for the household allowance yourself, and the most convenient way to do this is through the OmaVero service.
The application can be made as soon as the share of the work has been paid.
